Baths teases his upcoming album Gut with two new singles

After 7 long years, Baths (aka Will Wiesenfeld) is returning with a new album, Gut. His first since 2017’s Romaplasm, two singles have already been released from the album – “Sea of Men” and “Eden.”

Known for his ephemeral soundscapes and work on the Bee & Puppycat soundtrack, the upcoming Gut is Baths’ confessed ‘actual honest effort’ to write ‘from the stomach’. It will openly address topics such as his sexuality, harmful fantasies, and ‘dreamless living’.

The first single released ahead of the album, “Sea of Men”, is explicit right out of the gate – the first verse boasts the lyrics carnal is a normal mode / fucking all the men in droves, so right away you can feel the honesty Baths has decided to approach this new album from. Placed against the backdrop of the playful, twinkling melody, Baths’ light vocal timbre contrasts the lyrics and really makes this honesty feel like a punch to the gut. It’s direct, and unavoidable, especially when he sings everybody’s on their knees in a lovely falsetto.

The second single, “Eden”, is a similar story. Set in the middle of an echoing detuned piano melody and soft percussion, the looped lyrics baby you come down / straining my neck from looking up paint a very deliberate – and effective – picture. The circular melody and repeated lyrics from both the verses and chorus – if they can even be separated like that in this song – create a sense of lustful haziness. I get the sense that Baths wouldn’t have it any other way.

Gut releases in late February; “Sea of Men” and “Eden” is available on all DSPs.
